A senior wealth manager with more than 30 years of experience in financial markets, George King advises HNW families on their cross-border financial needs. ‘I am a problem solver,’ he tells Spear’s. Most of his cases tend to deal with investing, tax, and financial issues involving the complexity of cross-border US/UK tax and currency matters. ‘A lot of time is spent finding solutions for everything from renegotiating clients’ employment contracts, to finding good immigration, divorce or employment attorneys, to helping them teach their kids about financial matters,’ he notes.
A primary investment researcher for the first decade of his career, he’s since focused on working with HNW investor clients in New York, Miami and London. His career spans a broad range of investors around the world on investment strategy and portfolio construction, across all major asset classes and multiple currency regimes. He’s well suited to the approach of MASECO, which provides guidance to UK residents and Americans in the US and abroad, as well as financial advisers, trustees and foundations. MASECO is also the UK’s first Benefit Corporation in financial services, which it achieved in 2013.
The firm supports the cross-border wealth management needs of clients, either through advising them directly or working alongside their other trusted advisers. ‘Through the integration of wealth planning and investment management, we seek to provide tax-efficient investment solutions from both a US and UK perspective, while also flagging potential issues and opportunities in a client’s broader wealth picture,’ he says. ‘We help clients plan and problem-solve, working together over time and as their circumstances and goals change, providing access to a wide range of other professionals to help deliver thoughtful solutions.’
‘There is quite a large American expat community in and around London, so the ability to be a specialist niche provider of wealth planning and investment solutions was both an acute need and a robust market opportunity,’ says King, recalling the birth of MASECO in 2008. ‘The founding partners were looking after UK-resident Americans, and noticed that changing tax rules in the UK and reporting regulations in the US were about to make the investing and financial lives of these types of clients much more difficult,’ he adds.
It’s been a busy and strong year for King, who has noticed a ‘real hunger to learn’ among his clients. It’s not that they don’t want a wealth manager, he notes, but that they instead want to be ‘developing their own knowledge and experience over time’.
